Monreale

Monreale is a little gem near the city. The Duomo (Cathedral) is an astonishing representative of Arab-Norman Church (it is UNESCO World Heritage Site). As a small medieval town, it is pleasant to walk in the narrow streets between pizzerias and restaurants.

Transportation: Bus 108 to Piazza Indipendenza, then Bus 389 to Monreale

Saint Rosalia's Sanctuary

The sanctuary is located  in a cave on Mount Pellegrino and Rosalia is the patron saint of Palermo.

The church was built in the same cave where her remains were discovered. Devoted people lead a Pilgrimage every September 4: a tradition of walking barefoot from Palermo up to Mount Pellegrino.

Countrysides nearby Palermo

If you have a car and you enjoy natural tours, you can easily reach Palermo's surroundings both to seaside (Santa Flavia) and  countryside (such as Valle dello Jato and Corleone).

Bagheria and its aristocratic mansions

There are many aristocatic eighteenth-century mansions both in the city (San Lorenzo-Colli area) and in Bagheria, a town that become the preferred location for the vacation homes of Palermo's elites. You can  vitit a lot of baroque residences set in Bagheria such as the so called  "Villa dei mostri" (Villa Palagonia),  or Villa Cattolica, today  converted into Guttuso Museum. You can easily reach Bagheria by train from central station (about 15-20 minutes).

Erice

Medieval town of Erice is located on top of Mount Erice, at around 750 metres. This location is caracterized by a breathless view on western Sicily. Don't miss a visit to the Norman castle, called "Castello di Venere", and its garden. You can go for a one day tour by car.
